Blinds can come in a range of different fabrics and designs. They are a good choice for the modern home or office as blinds can be affordable and need little maintenance. However it is a good idea to clean your blinds regularly to keep them looking their best.

Fabric Blinds

Dust and debris can enter in through the window and will settle on fabric blinds so it is a good idea to use a dry, lint-free cloth and gently wipe over your blinds regularly. You could also use a vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust using the appropriate upholstery tool. You do need to be careful not to press too heavily on pleated or roller blinds as you could damage the look of the curtains. Some fabric blinds can be washed in a conventional washing machine. You will need to check the manufacturer s guidelines very carefully before you do this. In general roman blinds and pleated design cannot be washed in a washing machine as this can pull them out of shape.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds can be made from a number of different materials. For aluminium and plastic blinds you can clean them with warm soapy water (use a mild detergent). Rub over with a dry cloth to remove any excess water and polish up the blinds. To wipe clean louvre blinds take them down and place them on a flat surface. Clean gently from top to bottom and avoid rubbing too hard. You can machine wash fabric louvres and you can do this by tightly rolling them up and putting them in a pillowcase to keep them secure. Wash one roll at a time and use a cool wash and avoid using any of the spin cycles. Dry the louvres by unrolling them and laying them flat in a dry, airy place or laying them carefully over the bath or shower. Avoid leaving the louvres out in direct sunlight for too long as this can cause colour fade and avoid putting them in a tumble dryer.

Dry cleaning

Romans blinds tend to be made from luxurious fabrics such as silks and velvets and these will need dry cleaning. Check the manufacturer s instructions before you submit your blinds for dry cleaning and check with the cleaning service that they can accommodate this type of job. Don t forget to remove the fabric from the headrail as well as this will need cleaning too.

If you have a lot of blinds then it is a good idea to engage the services of a professional blind cleaning company. They will have the equipment required to clean blinds quickly and effectively and this will ensure that your blinds remain in top condition and last as long as possible.
