As a rogue you will be dealing high amounts of damage while attempting to dodge the opponents attacks. Fortunately you get plenty of abilities that stun your enemies, making them unable to attack you. I would still suggest you pick up First Aid for the powerful healing capabilities.
To get back to business, there are three talent trees you can choose from to level effectively. I still urge you to consider what tree you level with though, as they re not all as quick as the next because of this I suggest you take a look at my build below. This build will give you the safety of the Subtlety tree with the offensive powers of the Assassination tree.

You can obviously conclude your main tree will be Subtlety. I strongly recommend you don t start with this tree though. The early talents in Assassination are just so powerful for boosting your damage that it s hard to justify going Subtlety early on.
Anyway, first you should start by picking up Remorseless attacks in the Assassination tree. After that move to the combat tree and pick up Improved Sinister Strike. Now step back to the Assassination tree and finish Malice, then Improved Eviscerate, Lethatlity and Improved Poisons. These talents are just incredible for boosting your damage even at the lower levels.
As you hit level 30 I recommend you to unlearn your talents at the rogue trainer. Now you will go into Subtlety and get the talents up to Hemorrhage as shown in the tree linked before. The reason for this is that now you have an attack that is just amazing while leveling. The explanation for this is that in the current end game you won t find a lot of slow weapons any more (slower than 2.6 one handed weapons). Fortunately for you there are plenty of slightly slower weapons that allow you to exploit the mechanics behind Hemorrhage, which I will spare you.
Now you have 2 options. You could go deeper into the subtlety tree, or as I prefer return to the assassination tree and implement the same build as before towards improved poisons. This will do wonder for your damage. Lastly you can finish out the Subtlety to get even more tricks in your spell book..
Other people may suggest other trees than subtlety claiming the damage is lacking. The reason I prefer Subtlety is because as long as you choose the right weapon, you will be doing equal or more damage than the other trees on top of having tons of control.
On top of this the subtlety tree will give you a massive advantage in Player versus Player encounters as the tree has many nifty tools that fit right into that niche.
I did my fair share of mutilate leveling aswell and it can be great. Unfortunately mutilate relies a lot on being able to keep slice and dice up through Cut to the Chase which is very hard besides in the most populated areas. Besides this your final talent was also nerfed making it a lot less potent than in the ways where mutilate was a great leveling spec.
Another group of players swears by combat leveling. If you like going toe to toe with your opponents and just out damaging them instead of being a sneaky git, yes you may prefer combat. What you can t beat combat with is having powerful cooldowns that temporarily increase your damage by a lot allowing you to smash through elite quests and hostile players alike.
For any prospective rogue I highly recommend you follow the assassination into respeccing to subtlety route as it s a very diverse playstyle on top of giving you top notch damage.
